Liberal Nationalism and Its Critics Normative and Empirical Questions

Free Download Gina Gustavsson, "Liberal Nationalism and Its Critics: Normative and Empirical Questions"
English | ISBN: 0198842546 | | 324 pages | | 3 MB
The thesis of liberal nationalism is that national identities can serve as a source of unity in culturally diverse liberal societies, thereby lending support to and social justice. The chapters in this book examine that thesis from both normative and empirical , in the latter case using survey or psychological experiments from the U.S., Canada, the Netherlands, Denmark, France, and the UK. They explore how people understand what it means to belong to their nation, and show that different of national attachment - national , national pride, and national chauvinism - have contrasting effects on support for redistribution and on attitudes towards immigrants. The psychological mechanisms that may explain why people's identity matters for their willingness to extend support to others are examined in depth. Equally important is how the potential recipients of such support are perceived. 'Ethnic' and 'civic' conceptions of national identity are often contrasted, but the empirical basis for such a distinction is shown to be weak. In their place, a conception of national identity is explored, and defended against the charge that it is 'essentialist' and therefore exclusive of minorities. Particular attention is given to the role that can legitimately play within such identities. Finally the book examines the involved in integrating immigrants, dual nationals, and other minorities into the national community. It shows that although these groups mostly share the liberal values of the majority, their full inclusion depends on whether they are seen as committed and trustworthy members of the national 'we'.

Lectures on Nonsmooth Optimization

Free Download Lectures on Nonsmooth
English | 2025 | ISBN: 3031914163 | 564 Pages | (True) | 44 MB
This book provides an in-depth exploration of nonsmooth optimization, covering foundational algorithms, insights, and a wide range of applications. Nonsmooth optimization, characterized by nondifferentiable objective functions or constraints, plays a crucial role across various fields, including machine learning, , inverse problems, statistics, optimal control, and engineering. Its scope and relevance continue to expand, as many real-world problems are inherently nonsmooth or benefit significantly from nonsmooth regularization techniques. This book covers a variety of algorithms for solving nonsmooth optimization problems, which are foundational and recent. It first introduces basic facts on convex analysis and subdifferetial , various algorithms are then discussed, including subgradient , mirror descent methods, proximal algorithms, alternating direction method of multipliers, primal dual splitting methods and semismooth Newton methods. Moreover, error bound conditions are discussed and the derivation of linear convergence is illustrated. A particular chapter is delved into first order methods for nonconvex optimization problems satisfying the Kurdyka-Lojasiewicz condition. The book also addresses the rapid of stochastic algorithms for large-scale optimization. This book is written for a wide-ranging audience, including senior undergraduates, graduate students, researchers, and practitioners who are interested in gaining a understanding of nonsmooth optimization.
