Canned Heat's "Time Was" hit shelves in late February or early March of 1969 and climbed to #67 on the Hot 100 — modest by chart standards, but enough to make it one of the band's most enduring songs nearly sixty years on.
Its flip side never got the same shot. "Low Down" was, for reasons nobody's pinned down, left off Hallelujah, the album that followed that July, and it's been overlooked ever since: pressed once, on that 45, in a dedicated mono mix, and never properly reissued. Every copy that's surfaced on YouTube before now traces back to a 1994 remix made for the Uncanned! compilation, the same one every later reissue has leaned on. Which makes the original single mix worth something more than nostalgia — it's the only version of the song Alan "Blind Owl" Wilson ever heard released, since he'd be gone by the following year, dead at just 27. For most of 1969, and for a long time after, that scratchy mono 45 was the only way this song existed for anyone on Earth. Seems worth doing right.
