A 1977 album by Japan's celebrated drummer and percussionist Masahiko Togashi, who continued performing and developing his own unique playing style despite a spinal cord injury that left him paralyzed from the waist down. This is a quartet recording with Masami Nakagawa (flute, alto sax, percussion), Takashi Kako (piano), and Keiki Midorikawa (bass, cello, percussion).
The album features a studio recording of Masahiko Togashi Quartet - Sketch, which was premiered at the Masahiko Togashi Quartet / First Concert held at Zojoji Hall in Shiba, Tokyo, from March to May of the same year. Based on a predetermined score, the musicians freely explore improvisation, showcasing a development of free jazz that Togashi pioneered in the 1970s.
A1 stands out with its minimal piano refrains reminiscent of Don Cherry, over which various percussion instruments float dynamically. B2 features avant-garde jazz that syncs with the spirit of Chicago's AACM musicians.
