The first ever solo album by hip hop artist . Released through Death Row and Interscope, the West Coast gangsta album Dr. Dre - The Chronic is hailed as one of the most important releases of the , being highly influential in the rise of GFunk. With the release of the album, LA secured its throne in the forefront of hip hop.

Accompanied with a rich innovate production, Dr. Dre established himself as one of the top selling artists of 1993 with the album. Similar to his previous albums with NWA, The Chronic was met with heavy criticism towards its lyrics. One of the more notably controversial songs was the album's closer Bitches Ain't Shit, a posse cut that features misogynistic lyrics though was a huge underground hit that partly contributed to the album's sales.

A significant inclusion in the album was then newcomer rapper Snoop Doggy Dogg who quickly became a star with his unique flow and bars on the 3 singles off the album, Nuthin' but a G Thang (which peaked at 2 behind Snow's Informer), Fuck Wit Dre Day (that reached the top ten), and another top 40 hit with Let Me Ride. He previously worked with Dre on both of their first songs as solo acts on the theme song of Deep Cover. This intense exposure played a considerable part in making 's debut album, Doggystyle, the and commercial success that it was. The Chronic was also introduced with the promotional single Lil Ghetto Boy.

The album was met with big commercial success, after initially underperforming with a debut position at 27, it quickly peaked at 3 on the Billboard 200. It spent a total of 8 months in the Top 10 of the album charts. It finished the year as the 6th best performing album. It received universal acclaim by critics earning 3 Grammy nomination for each hit song, Let Me Ride winning Best Rap Solo Performance.
