However, during wartime, militaries have often exploited this season to launch surprise attacks in an effort to gain a tactical advantage over their opponents.
Unternehmen Bodenplatte (Operation Baseplate) exemplifies this approach by the Luftwaffe. Launched on January 1, 1945, the surprise, low-level, mass air attack involved 850 fighters and fighter-bombers, most of which were Fw 190s, targeting 17 Allied airfields in Belgium, the Netherlands, and France.
