A Body Politic to Govern: The Political Humanism of Elizabeth I is a fresh look at a much studied historical figure. This work examines the influence between the virtues and thoughts of the political humanists of the Italian Renaissance, and the political persona of England’s Elizabeth I. Special attention is paid to how Elizabeth constructed literary works such as letters and speeches, as well the style in which she governed England. This learned queen exemplified the virtues of political humanism through her dedication to the vita activa, amor patriae, and service to the greater good of her realm. In order to silence her critics who had license to criticize her as a female monarch, Elizabeth chose to speak the political language of the day, defending and asserting her right to rule by relying on her classical humanist education.

The Social Contract Political Equality from Putney to Rawls

Free Download William A. Edmundson, "The Social Contract: Political Equality from Putney to Rawls"
English | ISBN: 1009395262 | 2025 | 257 pages | PDF | 4 MB
We are all parties to a social contract and obligated under it. Or is this mere fiction? How is such an agreement possible in a society riven by deep moral disagreement? William Edmundson explains the social-contract tradition from its beginnings in the English Revolution, through Hobbes, Locke, and Rousseau to its culmination in the work of John Rawls. The idea that legitimate government rests on the consent of free equals took shape in the seventeenth century and was developed in the eighteenth but fell into disuse in the nineteenth century even as democracy, toleration, and limited government gained ground. Edmundson shows how Rawls revived the idea of a social contract in the mid-twentieth century to secure these gains, as the then-dominant moral theories, such as utilitarianism, could not. The book also defends Rawls’s conviction that political equality is integral to the idea of reciprocity at the heart of the tradition.

Political Entrepreneurship in the Age of Dealignment The Populist Far-Right Alternative for Germany

Free Download Michael A. Hansen, "Political Entrepreneurship in the Age of Dealignment: The Populist Far-Right Alternative for Germany "
English | ISBN: 3031508890 | 2024 | 228 pages | EPUB | 9 MB
This book traces the rise of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) from its inception in 2013 to its re-election to the Bundestag in 2021, emphasising the party’s nature as a "populist issue entrepreneur" and covering the three major crises that have shaken European party politics – the Eurozone crisis, the so-called refugee crisis and the COVID pandemic. Currently, books on the AfD are largely limited to historical accounts and surface-level analyses of the party. This volume is both empirically rigorous and conceptually nuanced: it seeks to understand the party’s political trajectory and its appeal to its supporters by using advanced quantitative methodologies to analyse voter behaviour, as well as by interpreting the party’s communication strategies through mixed empirical methods. It embeds this account within a well-grounded theoretical argument. The argument emphasises three important explanatory conditions – a favourable political opportunity structure, issue entrepreneurship, and the party’s stages of political development.
