Chernobyl Children

Free Download Chernobyl Children: A Transnational History of a Nuclear Disaster
English | 2025 | ISBN: 1009457764 | 365 Pages | PDF | 11 MB
In the wake of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, more than a million Belarusian, Ukrainian, and Russian children were sent abroad. Aided by the unprecedented efforts of transnational NGOs and private individuals, these children were meant to escape and recover from radiation exposure, but also from the increasing hardships of everyday life in post-Soviet society. Through this opening of the Soviet Union, hundreds of thousands of people in over forty countries witnessed the ecological, medical, social and political consequences of the disaster for the human beings involved. This awareness transformed the accident into a global catastrophe which could happen anywhere and have widespread impact. In this brilliantly insightful work, Melanie Arndt demonstrates that the Chernobyl children were both witness to and representative of a vanishing bipolar world order and the future of life in the Anthropocene, an age in which the human impact on the planet is increasingly borderless.

Food is a signifier of power for both adults and children, a sign of both inclusion and exclusion and of conformity and resistance. Many academic disciplines―from sociology to literary studies―have studied food and its function as a complex social discourse, and the wide variety of approaches to the topic provides multidisciplinary frames for understanding the construction and uses of food in all types of media, including children’s literature.

This book argues that supporting a child’s learning in primary school is more about nurturing their dispositions than continually assessing their performance. Drawing on the latest research in the fields of child development, psychology, health and well-being, it shows how teachers and parents have a deep impact on children’s learning, motivation and potential and the practices that offer children the best opportunities for future success.

We have a limited understanding of children’s experiences of domestic violence, parental substance misuse and parental health problems. The complex dynamics that can surround families dealing with these issues may make it difficult for parents and professionals to understand how children feel. As a result, children’s needs are often overlooked and they do not receive the support they need. This literature review examines what children say about living in families where there is domestic violence, parental substance misuse or parental health problems. It examines research undertaken in the UK from 1990 to 2003, to provide us with a better understanding of the range of children’s experience. Understanding what children say descnbes the key themes In children’s experiences, how children feel about the difficulties they experience at home, what their coping strategies are, and the support they would like to receive. It takes a broad view of children’s experiences because children themselves are unlikely to see their own lives in terms of one discreteproblem at home. For most, their situation will be complex and their experiences of domestic violence, parental substance misuse or parental ill health will be part of a larger picture of disadvantage or stress in the family.
