Unlearning the Soviet Tongue Discursive Practices of a Democratizing Polity

Free Download Unlearning the Soviet Tongue : Discursive Practices of a Democratizing Polity By Natalia Kovalyova
2014 | 247 Pages | ISBN: 0739191934 | EPUB | 1 MB
How do countries democratize? What route does the way out of totalitarianism take? Students of Russian politics have pursued answers to these questions by surveying Russians on a variety of attitudes, beliefs, norms, and practices. This book attends to political discourse to demonstrate how it creates and constraints political opportunities. It examines an important period of Russian political history: from Boris Yeltsin's second presidential election in 1996, when democracy was pronounced victorious, through its gradual slide toward authoritarian practices during Vladimir Putin's initial two terms in office, and to the election of his protégé Dmitry Medvedev in 2008. This analysis challenges the assertions of Russian democracy as doomed by the governing rationalities of the elites. Likewise, it refutes the notion of Russians as an apathetic nation in chronic need of a "strong hand." It argues that if we are to understand how Russia lives, how it endures, and how it can change, we need to pay attention to the discourses that shape Russian political identities and the nation's political future.

Universal Morality Reconsidered The Concept of God

Free Download Universal Morality Reconsidered : The Concept of God By Joseph Bankard
2013 | 268 Pages | ISBN: 1443846007 | PDF | 1 MB
Like many contemporary issues, moral discourse finds itself in the middle of a great divide. On one side of the chasm sits much of contemporary Western philosophy, moral psychology and the social sciences, which often view morality as a purely natural phenomenon. This view argues that human morality can be fully explained by appealing to naturalistic processes such as kin selection, reciprocal altruism, cultural evolution, and various models of social contract theory. In this context, God's existence is superfluous for morality. On the other side of the chasm sits popular Christian notions of ultimate morality, which believe it to emanate from the nature of God. Because of this, no Godless explanation of morality will be adequate. It is the opinion of this author that the divisive climate surrounding contemporary moral discourse would be aided by a constructive project designed to both engage the current moral research being done in the sciences, while taking seriously certain theological arguments linking ultimate morality to the existence of God. The current manuscript represents such a project. More specifically, this project focuses on universal forms of morality. The book's thesis is that universal morality is most successful when grounded in God. Unlike most other books of this kind which often dismantle or ignore the research being done in moral psychology and the social sciences, this manuscript is able to successfully integrate the newest empirical research into a theological framework.

2014 | 173 Pages | ISBN: 1443845949 | PDF | 1 MB
'Who am I?' The answer to this question is one of the most important issues a human being has to address in life. This is a question about possessing the continuous self, about the internal concept of oneself as an individual. The self-defining process, the discovery of the self takes place in the context of culture and society. The impact of social experience is felt across the whole life-span. Socialization exerted by parents, family and friends, acculturation to stereotypes and limited and limiting roles, inheritance of local identity and cultural myths, acknowledgement of the legacy of history contribute to the formation of poly-identity comprised of personal, racial, national, group or gender identities.Unity in Diversity. Cultural Paradigm and Personal Identity is a collection of essays by scholars of multicultural experience who, by employing different interpretative strategies indicative of their different backgrounds and interests, explore the issues of difference and otherness, inclusion/exclusion and of multiple ethnic, cultural, gender, and national identities.Offering literary, cultural, social, and historical perspectives the collection will be of interest to readers studying contemporary literature, (popular) culture, gender studies, sociology, and history.

Understanding What Children Say Children's Experiences of Domestic Violence, Parental Substance Misuse and Parental Health Pr

Free Download Understanding What Children Say : Children's Experiences of Domestic Violence, Parental Substance Misuse and Parental Health Problems By Sarah Gorin
2004 | 117 Pages | ISBN: 1904787126 | PDF | 1 MB
We have a limited understanding of children's experiences of domestic violence, parental substance misuse and parental health problems. The complex dynamics that can surround families dealing with these issues may make it difficult for parents and professionals to understand how children feel. As a result, children's needs are often overlooked and they do not receive the support they need. This literature review examines what children say about living in families where there is domestic violence, parental substance misuse or parental health problems. It examines research undertaken in the UK from 1990 to 2003, to provide us with a better understanding of the range of children's experience. Understanding what children say descnbes the key themes In children's experiences, how children feel about the difficulties they experience at home, what their coping strategies are, and the support they would like to receive. It takes a broad view of children's experiences because children themselves are unlikely to see their own lives in terms of one discreteproblem at home. For most, their situation will be complex and their experiences of domestic violence, parental substance misuse or parental ill health will be part of a larger picture of disadvantage or stress in the family.

Understanding Physiotherapy Research

Free Download Understanding Physiotherapy Research By Chris Littlewood; Stephen May
2013 | 136 Pages | ISBN: 1443846023 | PDF | 1 MB
Understanding Physiotherapy Research by Littlewood and May is an introductory level text that aims to be accessible and understandable to all physiotherapists who appreciate the need to integrate research evidence into their practice. The requirement for physiotherapists to engage with evidence-based practice has never been more apparent and the benefits of such an approach are clear. Evidence derived from research is a cornerstone of evidence-based practice, but before such evidence can be incorporated into an evidence-based paradigm, it should be appraised and its trustworthiness and applicability considered. This means that evidence-based physiotherapy practitioners need to be aware of the inherent strengths and limitations of research studies and what these mean for their practice. However, this is not always a straightforward process and it is not uncommon for both novice and experienced physiotherapists to become lost in the language of research. To facilitate the evolution of evidence-based physiotherapy practice, this book aims to bridge the gap by presenting a clinically focused range of methodological discussions in relation to specific research study designs in physiotherapy. The intention of the book is to offer a platform upon which readers can develop their understanding of meaningful critical appraisal and consequently gain confidence when reading published research.
