On the eve of the hundredth anniversary of the historic events at Kitty Hawk comes a splendidly illustrated account of the legendary twelve-second flight that changed the world forever. On 17, 1903, Orville and Wilbur Wright took to the air for less than a minute, accomplishing what mankind had only dreamed of for centuries. Now, almost one hundred years later, this account offers a unique look at the Wright Brothers' achievement, and at the many experiments that led up to their momentous ride. Revealing the brothers' youthful interest in technology and flight, the authors recount the trials and errors of other would-be aviators, and explain how the race to be the first man aloft became an international obsession. Readers will learn how The Flyer - the Wright Brothers' original plane - was built, and how its indefatigable inventors solved the that stumped their predecessors. And finally there is the historic flight itself - what went wrong and what, amazingly, went right - and the enormous impact the Wright Brothers had on their own and future generations. Written in engaging, accessible prose and, featuring more than 200 photographs and illustrations, On Great White Wings will delight anyone interested in the of flight and in the fantastic story behind the twentieth century's most important achievement.

Offender Reentry and Cognitive Intervention Propensity Score Matching Utility for Outcome Assessment

The mass incarceration policies of recent decades have created the corresponding realization that the vast majority of these individuals will someday be released back into society. Failure to properly prepare these individuals for their return to society will result in a large number of these individuals returning to prison. This research uses propensity score matching to create comparison groups in order to evaluate a cognitive intervention program designed to reduce recidivism. Survival analysis reveals that offenders who completed the program were less likely to recidivate and their survival time was longer when compared to offenders who did not complete the program.

The book is the first to on the oceanography of the North Indian Ocean (NIO), a special region of the ocean that exhibits a distinct seasonality due to the impact of the South Asian Monsoon (SAM). It is written as a textbook about the NIO for graduate students, lecturers, and researchers in physical oceanography. It will also be useful for courses on the interior, coastal, and equatorial dynamics in any other ocean. It helps readers, particularly new entrants to the , to gain a understanding of tropical-ocean dynamics by: developing from first principles the equation set for the linear continuously stratified (LCS) , which has long been used to study tropical oceans; and then obtaining solutions that explore different of the dynamics.

Not So Strange Bedfellows The Nexus of Politics and Religion in the 21st Century

Free Download Not So Strange Bedfellows : The Nexus of and in the Century By Jim Jose; Rob Imre
| 225 Pages | ISBN: 1443865842 | | 1 MB
At the intersection of politics and religion is a nexus of belief in doctrine and adherence to socio- conventions. Lines of communication and of belonging permeate both spheres, enabling their respective participants, especially the (often self-described) 'true believers', to bond and belong, and most importantly to adhere to their various belief systems. Traditionally, this nexus has been approached from a standpoint that posits the idea of secularity as the governing principle. The authors in this volume challenge this orthodoxy. They examine a diverse range of historical and geographic locations involving markedly different religious and political movements. They explore how nation-states develop political religions, how they actively promote a politics infused with religiosity, and how they transfer symbols and meanings from one socio-political construct to another. Despite markedly different differences, the contributors repudiate the currently dominant orthodoxies on the relationship between religion and politics. They demonstrate that 'secular' democracy is not radically separate from religion. Nation-states actively participate in the of this nexus even as they extol their commitment to secular values. In so doing, they demonstrate that secularity as it is currently understood remains deeply implicated in the nexus between religion and politics in the twenty-first century.
