Tucked away in Canned Heat's catalog is what might be the band's most quietly devastating song: "Poor Moon." While 1969 was busy churning out space-age wonder, guitarist Alan "Blind Owl" Wilson — the group's resident conservationist, decades before that was a compliment — used it to strike a very different chord. His worry was never whether we'd reach the moon; it was what we'd do to it once we got there. The same greed, waste, and short-term thinking already gnawing at the Earth, exported to a second target. It wasn't abstract, either — chatter at the time about the government treating the lunar surface as a nuclear dumping ground gave the song its teeth. Nearly six decades later, that dread hasn't aged a day. Makes you wonder what the Blind Owl would've made of a rocket-launching billionaire scattering satellites across the sky in the name of progress.
