"Remember, green's your color. You are Spring" are the closing lines of Gwendolyn Brooks' poem To The Young Who Want To Die, from which Tasha derives the title of her fourth studio album, You Are Spring! "You need not die today. Stay here," the Pulitzer Prize-winning poet also writes. This meditative yet hopeful celebration of life is what fellow Chicago native singer-songwriter Tasha Viets-VanLear provides in this record.

Brooks' words are echoed in the a capella three-part harmony of the opening track, "Spring," as Tasha, joined by L'Rain and Jamila Woods, sings "Don't die now/ There's life to be found now" and "A promise of sunshine upon us/ Alive now/ It's spring now." Emerging from the grief and turmoil shared on her previous album, Tasha leaves the winter behind as her music embodies both the symbolic and natural elements of springtime.

The images of pink blossoms and green leaves that colour the video to the next track, "Clarion," epitomise the luscious soundscape that blooms throughout the record, led by Gregory Uhlmann's verdant wall-of-sound production. A member of experimental jazz quintet SML, the guitarist/composer (and another Chicagoan) brings his signature otherworldly guitar and synth tones, vitalising it with buzzing energies and intricate textures. Bright piano melodies are lifted by strings on "Lucky" and rounded by the rich and earthy tones of flute and clarinet on tracks such as "Promise" and "Special."

The album has less direction in the second half, as if sinking into the heat and haziness of summer and the rhythmic cushion of Tasha's soft guitar and layered vocals. Yet despite this whimsical and sunny disposition, it remains rooted in the present moment, evident in the disruptive balladic piano and political rumination of "Ending." Likewise, closing track "Quick!" recalls the fleeting nature of life and the cycle of seasons. For now, though, the grace and florality of You Are Spring! encourages us to become the very hope we celebrate in spring's renewal. Enjoy the warmth while it lasts—stay here.
